At Ely, Mariah McDonald poured in 25 points and the Timberwolves held on to top Virginia, 51-46.
Ely held the Blue Devils to only 14 first-half points, which proved to be the difference as Virginia could not overcome the 25-14 halftime deficit.
Virginia’s top scorer was Nikki Jasura with 17, and she was followed closely by Hannah Lenich with 16.
Ely (2-4) hosts Tower-Soudan Tuesday at 6:45 in the first day of the Ely Holiday Tournament.
Virginia plays again Jan. 5 against Duluth Marshall.
