E-G Area ices Hibbing, 2-1

Eveleth-Gilbert took advantage of that situation twice en route to a 2-1 victory over Hibbing/Chisholm in a high school girls hockey game Thursday at the Hibbing Memorial Arena.

The Bluejackets couldn’t get a fifth player in their defensive zone fast enough to thwart those two Golden Bears’ goals.

The Bluejackets took advantage of one of their power plays as Maddy Wheelecor walked in from the left boards and scored past

Eveleth-Gilbert goalie Vicky Fossland at the 9:42 mark of the first period.

Just a couple minutes later, the Golden Bears went on the power play, but Hibbing/Chisholm killed it off, but before that extra defensive got into the zone, Jordana Turner scored at the 13:53 mark and it was tied 1-1.

The Bluejackets took another penalty early in the second period, but once again, killed it off only to see a shot from Katie Kingston go into the net at the 5:04 mark to give the Golden Bears the lead.

The Bluejackets, on the other hand, came out ready to play in the final 17 minutes, but they couldn’t get anything past Fossland. Hibbing/Chisholm also passed up a number of chances to put the puck on net.

Fossland stopped 26 shots, and Dory Johnson had 30 saves for the Bluejackets.
