Sports Year in Review

The 2009 sports season was another memorable one for area teams and individuals.

The year featured several state tournament appearances, state titles and a number of near misses.

The year 2009 included the following memorable events:


-Football:  Virginia, meanwhile, was stymied by Mora 21-7 in the Section 7AAA Championship in Duluth. The Blue Devils finished the season 7-3.

-Cross Counrty:  Virginia senior Wes Stubbs also qualified for state after finishing eighth at sections.

-Softball:  The Blue Devils (21-4) came painfully close to making it to the State Softball Tournament last May. Virginia lost both games of the Section 7AA championship to Hermantown, each by a 1-0 score and each in the seventh inning.

-Volleyball:  The Blue Devils, however, came into the postseason with a 12-15 record and managed to get a No. 3 seed. They went on to defeat No. 6 seed Duluth Marshall in three straight games and advanced to play Hermantown (the No. 2 seed).  Virginia’s strong season would end there, though, as the Hawks held off a spirited Blue Devils squad 3-2 in the quarterfinals on Oct. 30.

-Track and Field:  Virginia’s Jessa Youso garnered ninth place in the Class A girls shot put competition for the second straight year. She finished with a throw of 109 feet, 9 inches.

-Girls Tennis:The Virginia Blue Devils capped off a stellar season with a 4-3 victory over Rochester Lourdes at the Class A Girls State Tennis Tournament to capture third place.  Virginia opened up at state with a 5-2 victory over Roseau before falling 6-1 to eventual Class A state champion Mounds Park Academy. In individuals, Amanda Arbogast won her first match at state before falling in the second round. Caley Westin and Katie Kingston also qualified for state, but they lost both of their matches in Minneapolis.

Zephyrs upend Devils, 5-2

VIRGINIA �” Charlie Adams netted a hat trick as Mahtomedi, ranked fifth in Class A, skated past sixth-ranked Virginia/Mountain Iron-Buhl, 5-2 on Saturday afternoon at “Bree” Cuppoletti Arena in Virginia.
Brandon Zurn and Johno May also scored for the Zephyrs, who snapped a 3-3 tie with two goals in the third period.

Lady Devils fall against Ely 51-46

At Ely, Mariah McDonald poured in 25 points and the Timberwolves held on to top Virginia, 51-46.
Ely held the Blue Devils to only 14 first-half points, which proved to be the difference as Virginia could not overcome the 25-14 halftime deficit.

Blue Devils ice Broncos, 5-3

VIRGINIA �” The Blue Devils used their depth Friday night to wear down International Falls and skate to a 5-3 win at “Bree” Cuppoletti Arena.
Both teams came into the matchup state ranked in Class A (Virginia/MI-B 6th and the Broncos 14th), and it was the Devils that clearly pulled away from their Iron Range competitors.

Blue Devils top Raiders, 78-25

E-G Area ices Hibbing, 2-1

Boys Hockey ties against Grand Rapids 2-2

The Devils’ Garrett Hendrickson had a pair of goals Tuesday night, but the Thunderhawks rallied to even the score 2-2 heading into overtime.
Neither team could light the lamp in the extra session and the contest ended in a tie.
Casey Myhre was in the nets for Virginia (2-2-1) and recorded 27 saves.

E-G Area Girls Hockey team loses a close one to G-R-G

The Grand Rapids/Greenway girls hockey team went ahead 4-0 after scoring four unanswered goals in the second period and the Golden Bears fell just short of a comeback in a 4-3 loss on Tuesday night.

Virginia Area Wrestling takes a tough loss against Hibbing 56-19
